How do you identify if your tooth is dead? A tooth starts to die when blood supply is cut off to the pulp. You may notice discoloration or feel mild to severe pain in the tooth or gums. When the tooth becomes more infected or abscessed, you may experience bad taste in your mouth or swelling around your gum line. Extraction and root canal are two treatment options for a dead tooth. Early treatment is recommended to prevent the spread of infection, which could lead to tooth removal. The root canal procedure involves the endodontist making an opening into the tooth to remove the pulp and infection. The dentist will fill and seal the roots and place a permanent filling in the opening. As dead tooth could easily chip or break, a dental crown may be needed to support the tooth.<\/span><\/p>\n
